Naxchivan (Naxçıvan)
  • Completion date: August, 2017
  • Client: State Committee for Land Reclamation and Water Management
  • Category: Environmental Restoration Projects
  • Activity type: Wastewater treatment
  • Location: Azerbaijan

In Nakhchivan city, a new wastewater treatment plant was constructed, marking one of the largest environmental projects in the region. With a capacity of 146,000 PE (60) and 31,848 m³/day, the plant is located only 2 km north of the Araz River. Construction began in 2014, and by the end of 2016, the facility was commissioned. By July 2017, the plant was fully operational.

The project was implemented by the BIOWORKS consortium together with a local civil contractor. BIOWORKS provided the design, supply, and commissioning of electromechanical equipment. The entire treatment facility is housed within enclosed buildings, ensuring adaptability to both the harsh climate and the urban environment.

The treatment process is based on MBR (membrane bioreactor) technology, delivering superior wastewater purification, preserving ecological balance, and preventing adverse impacts on the Araz River ecosystem. Despite the region’s extreme climate (with winters reaching -30°C and summers exceeding +40°C), the system operates reliably and represents a major contribution to the sustainable development of Nakhchivan.
